biomega® CCO Dr. Silke Middendorf to speak at IFFO Annual Conference
biomega®, a pioneering biotechnology company that provides salmon peptides and oils for petfood and human nutrition applications, will spotlight its speciality ingredients at the world’s only conference dedicated to the fish oil industry hosted by IFFO, The Marine Ingredients Organisation.
Dr. Silke Middendorf, Chief Commercial Officer at biomega® will share her expert insight into the development of marine by-products as a panellist at the IFFO 60th Annual Conference, which will reunite the marine ingredients industry in-person for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
Taking place in Peru, Lima between 24th – 26th October, the conference attracts over 400 delegates in the industry and is a ‘must attend’ event for the world’s producers of fishmeal and fish oil.
Commenting on the event, Dr. Middendorf said: “It is a great honour to be invited as a panellist to discuss how by-products can be developed sustainably at this year’s IFFO conference. As biorefinery specialists, biomega® is keen to share how our unique technology process, which uses continuous enzymatic hydrolysis, can support the marine industry’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) by upcycling raw materials to work towards a zero-waste approach.”
The panel, ‘Making the most of by-products’, will form part of the conference’s agenda on 25th October and is scheduled to run at 5.10PM (local time). It will be chaired by IFFO Technical Director, Dr. Brett Glencross.
“While 31% of the world’s marine ingredient production currently originates from by-products1, more needs to be done,” continued Dr. Middendorf. “It is estimated that almost 12 million tonnes of by-product are not collected from processing plants across Asia, Europe and Latin America2. At biomega® we are actively working to help change that.
“Our sustainability model features five drivers – refusing what we do not need, reducing what we do need, reusing and recycling resources where possible and rethinking our processes to drive innovation at scale. As part of the three-day programme, the IFFO Annual Conference will also feature panels discussing the global trends in fishmeal and fish oil supply, upcoming action on sustainability and climate change, alongside an update on how the industry is dealing with the current supply chain crisis.
